3 Tips for Using Anchor Text for SEO

Articles3 Tips for Using Anchor Text for SEO

Is your SEO investment working for you? Here are a few tips related to anchor text. When building backlinks or creating internal links to pages on your own site, it’s important that you choose your anchor text carefully. The anchor text is the text that you use to embed a link. Choosing the right anchor text will help Google understand what the link is about, which then helps them index and rank the page it is linking to. Here are a few tips for choosing the right anchor text.

Don’t Overdo It

Using a keyword in an anchor text will help rank the page being linked to. However, it’s important that you don’t overdo it. If all of the links to your site contain the same keyword in the anchor text, Google will get suspicious and may penalize your site.

Mix It Up

Even when you do include a keyword in your anchor text, it doesn’t always have to be the same exact keyword, word-for-word. Mix things up by using different variations of a long-tail keyword. This will help Google categorize the page being linked to without appearing too spammy.

Use Naked Links

Although a portion of the anchor text of your inbound links should contain keywords that are relevant to your site, the majority of them should be naked or branded URLs. Naked URLs are when the anchor text is the exact link URL (https://yourwebsite.com), and a branded anchor text is when the text where the link is embedded is also your brand name or your website name, without the full link.
