SEO 101 – Where Do You Start?

ArticlesSEO 101 – Where Do You Start?

You’re looking to purchase a new product or service… maybe somewhere to get your hair cut. What do you do? If you’re like me (and really everyone else), you go to your favorite search engine and try to find what will meet your needs. How do you feel if you can’t find the information you’re looking for, or if the salon doesn’t have a website at all? You will probably look elsewhere. The big point is – if you can’t be found on the internet, you aren’t being found at all.

This is the same whether you’re in B2B or B2C. Update your copy, make sure your aesthetics and layout are on point. Just like the front of your store, you want it to be something that you’re proud of.

If you are proud of your website, you need to start showing it off! Remember – “there’s no use in talking if no one is listening.” SEO (search engine optimization) is the foundation for being found on the internet.

There are two types of SEO: Organic and pay-per-click. Pay-per-click is pretty easy. Write a check to the search engine and you have advertising space right at the top. Stop writing that check though, and you’re even harder to find than when you started.

Organic SEO takes time, effort, and patience. You aren’t going to get to the first page the first day you decide to implement your SEO strategy. We get it, it’s frustrating. There are a lot of SEO requirements that are just out of your control. But the good thing is: it’s out of everyone else’s control too. Here’s the even better news: we can help you bridge the gap.

Here are some quick tips on how to keep your website in top SEO shape:

  1. Get to Know Your Competition

Maybe you want to compete for those same keywords that your competition is using, but maybe now’s the time to carve out a niche for yourself. Is there anything that you do really well that your competition isn’t advertising for themselves? Customers are searching for it! Keyword research from an experienced marketing agency can help.

  2. Get Talking

There’s always an excuse not to blog. You don’t have time, you don’t know what to write about, or you just don’t think you’re a very good writer. Your audience isn’t looking for the next Shakespeare, they want to hear from you! Visitors love feeling like they can connect with you, and Google likes the fresh, keyword-rich content.

  3. Get Social

The more links you have directing people to your website from outside, the better your ranking will be. This can go hand-in-hand with starting a blog. Introduce the topic through Twitter, and then shuttle them to your website to read the rest.

  4. Get Some Help

If you use an open-source platform like WordPress, there is a lot of maintenance you can do yourself to keep your website looking up to date. Even developing content can be easy enough to generate. But when it comes to SEO, there’s a lot that you can’t see. An experienced marketing group or web developer should be able to go behind the scenes of your website and add the right keywords.
